Life in Columba’s day could be harsh. Outside their tribe a person had no value or rights. But to Columba everyone was made in God’s image, with worth and dignity.
Columba made a risky journey up the Great Glen to meet Bridei, the Pictish king. There was conflict between the Picts and Columba’s people, the Gaels. Despite this, in the king’s fortress, Columba demanded that a slave girl be set free, because he saw her “as a human being.”
One story tells of a monster in the River Ness terrorising some villagers. Although they were Picts, Columba banished the monster to the depths.
A young woman was fleeing an armed man. Columba tried to protect her but the man ran her through with his spear. Columba called down God’s judgement – the man dropped dead. The story inspired a later abbot, Adomnán, to create the first law protecting non-combatants in war.
Tribalism still separates people today. ‘Outsiders’ are victimised. Minorities struggle for their rights. Modern slavery abounds.
The vulnerable face powerful ‘monsters’. Civilians are still attacked in war.Who do you see more as an enemy than a friend?
