Community

On the west coast of Scotland lies the windswept island of Iona. Here Columba created a new community. On three sides, the monastery was enclosed by a long bank of earth, a “vallum”. The fourth side was the shore, open to the world.

And the world came to that shore – pilgrims and penitents, craftsmen and women, beggars and kings. No matter why they came; whatever their gifts or problems; and whatever their tribe or ethnic group – all were welcome.

The community was rooted in prayer and study, and it rang to the sounds of life – metalwork and tanning, farming and milling – and to the powerful, joyful voice of Columba. His great love was copying the holy scriptures in his hut on the little hill above the small wooden church. Here, they said, he often met with angels. It was that sort of place.

Communities can be very different. Some close in on themselves, others open up and include. Many people are looking for a place to belong, where they can be accepted and offer their gifts.

Where is your place? What story would you tell of community?
